Matthew Grabelsky’s oil paintings depict people with animal heads, often riding the New York City subway. He uses fun details that connect to specific animals to tell humorous stories. Matthew became fascinated by animals as a child during frequent trips to the zoo and through fantastical stories his parents read to him.

In college, an Art History class sparked Matthew’s interest in classical European figurative paintings and he became enamored with how these works presented views of the world that his mind could wander around in. He wanted to create his own contemporary version of them, so he studied classical painting techniques and hit on the idea of anthropomorphic figures with animal heads. Matthew grew up in New York where the subway was the central place everyone came together so this became the primary setting for his characters.
